UN relief agency declared terrorist organization in Israel

The Israeli parliament on Monday gave preliminary approval to a bill to designate the main UN agency providing relief to Palestinians as a terrorist organization. This is a proposal by Israel to break relations with the body.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is working primarily for Palestinian refugees. UNRWA provides education, health and aid to millions of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Israeli leaders have accused it of collaborating with Hamas in Gaza. The vote against it is being considered as Israel’s latest step to put pressure against the agency.

The Knesset Information Service said the bill would be sent to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further deliberations. The bill was introduced by Israeli MP Yisrael Beitenu. It has long had tense relations with Israel but relations have deteriorated rapidly since the start of the war in Gaza and Israel has repeatedly called for the dissolution of UNRWA.
