Netanyahu was set to visit a memorial for former United States Senator Joe Lieberman (who died in March at the age of 82), a staunch ally of Israel, on Wednesday morning. During this, a group of protesters raised slogans outside the Washington Hebrew Congregation. It was written on the T-shirts of the protesters, ‘Jews say stop giving arms to Israel’.
With today’s address, Netanyahu will address a joint session of the US Congress for the fourth time. With this, he will surpass United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who has given the most speeches in the joint session of the US Congress so far. Earlier, Netanyahu had addressed the US Parliament in 1996, 2011 and 2015.
At the same time, nine US senators as well as dozens of House members have announced to boycott Netanyahu’s address, citing Israel’s action in Gaza as the reason for staying away from Netanyahu’s speech. Those absent from Parliament include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Senator Bernie Sanders and Senate Pro Tempore Patty Murray. At the same time, others also condemned the Israeli PM’s troubled leadership.
