St. John’s (ANI): Cricket West Indies’ senior men’s selection panel on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England at home starting December 3, including two uncapped all-rounders. . Ahead of.
“The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against England starting on December 3,” a board statement said.
Shai Hope will once again lead the team and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been made the new vice-captain.
The team has two uncapped players: batting all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford and seam-bowling all-rounder Matthew Ford – who has earned his first call-up at senior international level. The selection panel also recalled veteran wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich, who played his only ODI in May 2019; and opening batsman Kjorn Ottley, who played two ODIs in January 2021.
Chief selector Dr Desmond Haynes said:
“We named Alzarri Joseph as vice-captain as he demonstrated maturity and good leadership qualities for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes during the recent Super50 Cup. We believe that with performance and opportunities he can be a future leader in West Indies cricket. Matthew Ford is an all-round cricketer who has been impressive. He is one of the players coming through the West Indies Academy program who can be part of the future.”
“England on a West Indies tour is always full of excitement and expectations. We expect this to be a hard-fought series, but we are also confident that this team will perform well in our home conditions.
We have a clear vision. We are focused on building a solid team. Our main focus is to rebuild for success in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.”
West Indies missed out on the ICC Cricket World Cup this year after failing to secure even a top two finish in the World Cup Qualifiers. They reached the Super Six stage in the qualifiers, but defeats to the Netherlands, Scotland and Zimbabwe throughout the tournament seriously hurt their chances of qualification.
Sri Lanka and Netherlands took the top two positions and qualified for the marquee tournament.
The series with England will begin with two ODI matches on Sunday 3 December and Wednesday 6 December at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The first ODI is a day game which will start at 9:30 am and the second CG United ODI will be a day/night game which will start at 1:30 pm.
The tour will then move to Barbados for the third and final ODI to be played at the Kensington Oval on Saturday 9 December. This will also be a day/night game which will start at 1:30 pm.
Ahead of the first match, the West Indies team will gather for a preparation camp in Antigua from Monday, November 20. Head coach Darren Sammy indicated that the camp is an important component of the team’s preparations to face the visitors. The camp will take place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and Coolidge Cricket Ground with net and planning sessions as well as fitness and strength and conditioning sessions.
“Everyone is fully aware of what is required when preparing to face England on their home soil. The camp will be detailed and based on the specialties we have identified as necessary if we are to be successful internationally. We will have high-intensity, purposeful training sessions and everything we do will be towards improvement and winning.”
Sammy said.
He said, “I believe in preparation. I believe that when you prepare well, you have the best chance of winning. When you work hard, do the right kind of work, when you hone your skills, it will add value to your game.” Added.
