Today the whole world is going through a very difficult time. Different countries around the world are struggling with humanitarian problems like war, death, destruction, rampant racism, oppression of minorities and persistent sexism. This list of problems is quite long. Not only this, in the last years the world has collectively overcome epidemics like Covid-19. Meanwhile, a new study has shown that being more socially conscious can lead to the problem of depression. This new research conducted by a Finnish academic in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology is quite interesting. New research reveals links between social justice awareness and mental health. New research suggests there are some downsides to being more engaged in critical discussion around social justice.
Being ‘conscious’ – has often been used as an insult for those who are progressive in their political leanings. According to a new study, this awareness can increase feelings of anxiety and depression in people with such thinking.
What do psychologists say about the new study?
Dr Austin Fernandes, psychiatrist at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai, believes that even though this new study shows the link between mental health illnesses amid deviation from the principles related to important social issues, there is a need to understand the condition in depth and more. It is very important to understand in detail. It is not only about knowing and dealing with the systemic inequities or social issues that create anxiety and depression, but also about how individuals interact with these concepts and how they relate to their own personal experiences. This has consequences for their emotional health.
According to Dr. Fernandes, many people participate actively in discussions on issues like injustice and social justice. Such discussions often become threatening and heated. Mental stress and anxiety are seen more in such participants. Also, people who face criticism or lack self-confidence may experience loneliness and despair, which can also worsen their mental health. In such a situation, it is very important to strike a balance between taking care of yourself emotionally.
Do these things for mental health
set your boundaries
When disturbing news and social media content becomes excessive, stay away from them. Also limit the use of social media. Set aside a time to engage with social issues. Also give priority to those activities which can give you happiness and relaxation.
be kind to yourself
Be kind to yourself and recognize that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed or tired sometimes. Treat yourself with the same empathy and understanding that you would treat other people facing similar challenges.
seek help from close friends
Talk to close friends, family members or mental health professionals about your feelings and experiences. Share your thoughts and feelings with people who understand you. Who listens to you very seriously and helps in finding a solution to that problem.
adopt a flexible approach
To deal with problems like depression, you should adopt a flexible attitude. Also develop skills within yourself for stress management. Practice mindfulness, positive self-talk and problem-solving techniques to deal effectively with challenges.
