Talking about his decision in the podcast, Gilchrist said, “A funny thing happened. When was the last time I played a Test match. I played the last Test match against India in Adelaide. In that Test, I hit a simple ball off Brett Lee. The night before, I had talked to my wife on the phone and was making further plans because we were going to tour the West Indies after the series against India.

The great wicketkeeper further added, β€œOn the West Indies tour, I was probably going to play 99 Tests, and after that we were going to tour India, and that’s where I would have played my 100th Test, but in the Adelaide Test I was caught by VVS Laxman. I tried to catch Brett Lee but it was an easy catch and then I saw the replay on the big screen and it was probably 32. Was shown.

The former Australian wicketkeeper further said, “At that very moment I went to Matthew Hayden and said that my work is done, now I am out. I had realized that I had lost the ability to compete. After missing the catch, a In a moment I realized that it was time to retire, don’t worry about the 100th Test in India, I had taken the decision at that time to leave Test cricket.

Gilchrist also talked about Matthew Hayden’s reaction and said, “When I told Hayden about this, he tried to console me. He looked at me and said, ‘Come on man, don’t beat yourself up. It’s not the first catch you’ve dropped and it probably won’t be the last, let’s face it, good support from a friend, but that was a moment in the Indian series in Australia that I remember most. It was a defining moment of my career and I don’t and never have regretted it.”
