IND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 3 | Gill returns to the game with a half-century, India gets a lead of 273 runs

Visakhapatnam: James Anderson took two wickets, after which Shubman Gill, with the help of luck, completed a half-century on the third day of the second cricket test against England here on Sunday (ND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 3) In the second innings, India’s score reached 130 runs for four wickets, taking the total lead of the host team to 273 runs. At lunch, Gill (60 not out) and Akshar Patel (02 not out) were at the crease.

Gill survived DRS in two consecutive overs and then completed his first half-century in 13 innings. India started the day with 28 runs without losing any wicket. The team added 102 runs in the morning session but lost the wickets of captain Rohit Sharma (12), Yashasvi Jaiswal (17), Shreyas Iyer (29) and Rajat Patidar (09). The first 30 minutes of the morning session were in Anderson’s name. In his first over of the day, he uprooted Rohit’s off stump on a slightly outward moving ball. In the next over, this 41-year-old fast bowler got Jaiswal, who had scored a double century in the first innings, caught by Joe Root at first slip.

Gill struggling with bad form

Gill and Iyer, who were struggling with poor form, handled the innings by adding 81 runs in 112 balls. Gill showed hesitation in the beginning and Anderson troubled him a lot. He was given LBW by the on-field umpire off spinner Tom Hartley but after taking DRS he had to change the decision as the ball had hit the bat before hitting the pad. In the next over, Anderson made a credible LBW appeal against him but the on-field umpire did not give him out and this time he was saved due to ‘umpire’s call’ when the opposition team took DRS.

Gill got into rhythm after this. He went ahead and hit a straight six on Shoaib Bashir and made good use of his steps against the spinners. Gill completed his half-century with two consecutive fours off leg spinner Rehan Ahmed. Iyer also played some good shots at the other end but Ben Stokes ended his innings by taking a brilliant catch running backwards from mid-off on Hartley’s ball. Patidar, who was making his debut, was caught by wicketkeeper Ben Fox off the ball of Rehan.
