Why was Muslim League (Masarat Alam Bhat) banned in Jammu and Kashmir?

Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir, also known as ‘Masrat Alam faction’ (Masrat Alam,is a social and political organization working to maintain its presence in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Although its scope spans across a variety of issues, there are some allegations that the organization may be involved in anti-India activities.

The central government has declared Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir (Masarat Alam Bhat) a banned organization under the stringent anti-terrorism law. The leader of this banned organization, Masarat Alam Bhat, is known for running an anti-India and pro-Pakistan agenda.

The Union Home Ministry said that this ban has been imposed in view of the organization’s involvement in anti-national and separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir with the intention of establishing a reign of terror in the country.

The Union Home Ministry said in a notification that the intentions of Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir (Masarat Alam Bhat) are to liberate Jammu and Kashmir from India, merge it with Pakistan and establish Islamic rule. The Home Ministry said that Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir (Masrat Alam faction) and its members show disrespect for the constitutional authority and system of the country and their illegal activities are a threat to the integrity, sovereignty, security and communal harmony of India.

Announcing the imposition of restrictions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the message of the Narendra Modi-led central government is very clear that those working against the unity, sovereignty and integrity of the country. No person will be spared and will have to face legal action.

Shah wrote on ‘X’, Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masrat Alam faction) has been declared an ‘unlawful organization’ under UAPA. This organization and its members are involved in anti-national and separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, this organization supports terrorist activities and incites people to establish Islamic rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ban will remain in effect for a period of five years from the date of publication in the Official Gazette until further orders. According to a ministry official, so far this year, four organizations have been banned under the anti-terrorism law UAPA and six individuals have been declared terrorists.
