America’s 16th President has been assassinated
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of America, was also shot dead. On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot and killed by a man named John Wykes Booth. During the incident he was watching the play ‘Our American Cousin’ at Ford’s Theater in Washington with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. Later the attacker Booth was shot dead on 26 April 1865. He was found hiding in a field near Bowling Green, Virginia.
Ames Garfield also murdered
America’s 20th President, Ames Garfield, was the second President of the country who was assassinated just six months after assuming office. He was walking to a train station in Washington on July 2, 1881, when he was shot by Charles Giteau. Giteau was convicted and sentenced to death in June 1882.
The 25th President was also murdered
The 25th President of America was William McKinley. McKinley was shot in Buffalo, New York on September 6, 1901, while he was shaking hands with people after giving a speech. A person shot him twice in the chest from close range. McKinley died during treatment on September 14, 1901. After him, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the country. Leon F., 28, of Detroit, pleaded guilty to the shooting. He was given death penalty by electrocution on 29 October 1901.
There was also a fatal attack on the 32nd and 33rd President
Similarly, America’s 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt had just finished his speech from an open car in Miami when the sound of gunshots was heard. Roosevelt was not injured in this incident in February 1933, but Chicago Mayor Anton Carmack lost his life. Guiseppe Zangara, convicted of this attack, was given the death penalty. After this, America’s 33rd President Harry S. Truman was attacked in Blair House in Washington in November 1950. Two gunmen had entered it. Truman survived the shootout with the gunmen, but a White House policeman and one of the attackers were killed. Two other White House policemen were injured. Oscar Callajo was arrested and executed in this attack. In 1952, Truman commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment. President Jimmy Carter released him from prison in 1979.
35th President John F. Kennedy also shot dead
John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of America, was also shot dead by the attackers. When Kennedy visited Dallas with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in November 1963, he was ambushed by a gunman. Kennedy was immediately taken to the hospital, but he died. Police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald a few hours later, and two days later, Oswald was shot and killed as he was being transported from police headquarters to jail.
The 38th, 40th and 43rd Presidents were also shot.
This series of attacks on American Presidents continued. Gerald Ford, the 38th President, suffered two assassination attempts within a matter of weeks in 1975. But they were fortunate that both of them survived the incident. After him, America’s 40th President Ronald Reagan was shot in Washington in March 1981. He was attacked when he was leaving after giving a speech. Then John Hinckley Jr., who was in the crowd, shot him. He recovered after treatment. George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States: Bush was attending a rally with Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili in 2005 when a hand grenade was thrown towards him. The grenade did not explode and no one was injured.
Presidential candidate was shot dead in 1968
Presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt, who was also a former President. Roosevelt was shot while campaigning in Milwaukee in 1912. He did not suffer any serious injuries in this attack. But after this, Robert F. Kennedy was in the race to become the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, when he was shot dead in Los Angeles in 1968. Similarly, another presidential candidate, George C. Wallace, was in the race for nomination from the Democratic Party. He was shot during a campaign in Maryland in the year 1972. Due to this incident, he was paralyzed from the waist down.
