Dubai: In the voting for the presidential election in Iran, no candidate has received enough votes to win. These results have now made the presidential election quite complicated and interesting. Let us tell you that among the various candidates contesting for the post of President in Iran, a close contest was seen between the reformist leader Masoud Pezeshkian and the fundamentalist Saeed Jalili. But no one could secure enough votes to assume the presidency. Therefore, now there will be a direct contest between these two candidates in Iran. An official gave this information on Saturday.
Election spokesman Mohsin Islami said that the direct contest between Pezeshkian and Jalili will take place on Friday. Islami announced the election results during a press conference, which was broadcast live by Iran’s state television channel. He said that out of the total 2 crore 45 lakh votes, Pejeshkian got 1 crore 4 lakh votes and Jalili got 94 lakh votes. Radical speaker of parliament Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf got 33 lakh votes and Shia religious leader Mustafa Pourmohammadi got about 2,06,000 votes. According to Iranian law, a candidate can be declared the winner only if he gets more than 50 percent of the votes and if not, there will be a direct contest between the top two candidates.
What is the history of Iran’s presidential elections?
This has happened only once in Iran’s presidential election history, in 2005 when hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defeated former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Islami said the result would require formal approval by the country’s Guardian Council, but the candidates had not challenged the result. Voting took place on Friday for the presidential election in Iran. Iran’s hardline President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May, leading to presidential elections in the country. This election is taking place at a time when there is widespread tension in West Asia due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and Iran has been facing an economic crisis for the last several years.
