Russia fired 8 ballistic missiles at Kiev, Ukraine claims attack failed

Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed that early on Monday, Russia fired eight ballistic missiles targeting Kiev, which it foiled. Officials, however, said that even in the foiled attack, one person was injured by shrapnel. Loud explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital just after 4 a.m., followed by air raid sirens. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said debris from a missile fell in the Darnitsky district of eastern Kiev, while the windows of a house were damaged by explosions in other areas of the capital.

According to the Energy Ministry of Ukraine, due to the attack, electricity supply to 120 houses in the city was disrupted. According to the ministry, Russian troops deliberately targeted Ukraine’s energy system in winter last year, due to which electricity supply was disrupted in the entire country. Kiev was attacked just two weeks ago and Ukrainian officials said it was the deadliest drone attack since Russia began its offensive in 2022.

Russia’s attack on the capital on Monday comes at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is on a visit to Argentina. He has gone to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President of the Latin American country, Javier Milla. In addition to meeting in Argentina, Zelensky met the presidents of Uruguay, Paraguay and Ecuador.
