Cape Town: The hope of survival of 44 workers buried under the debris of a multi-storey building that collapsed a few days ago in South Africa is fading as the days pass. A five-storey building under construction collapsed on Monday afternoon this week in George city of South Africa. Officials said the biggest challenge for rescue workers to locate survivors is removing thousands of tonnes of debris with the help of heavy machines.
Death toll increased to 9
Officials said the death toll in the incident has increased to nine after a worker died during treatment at the hospital. He said that out of the 28 workers who have been rescued from the debris so far, 21 are in critical condition or have suffered deep injuries. According to officials, George city is located about 400 kilometers away from Cape Town, South Africa. George City officials fear the death toll could exceed 50.
New information revealed
According to officials, big machines are busy removing debris at the spot. Rescue teams are also making continuous efforts. City officials said rescue operations were still underway but no survivors had been found since Wednesday. The city administration has revised the number of missing people to 44 from 38 earlier, as more workers were present at the construction site than previously estimated. According to new information, 81 workers were working there when the building collapsed. Earlier officials had said that there were 75 laborers there.
